Day 213

The heart is a muscle.  It needs attention and care.  Usually this refers to the cardiovascular training argument – do cardio to exercise your heart, the muscle.

However, I believe that this works figuratively as well.  The more you open your heart, the more you feel (for better or worse as I have learned).  The more you use your heart for IANs, the more it has the capacity to continue giving IANs.  The more love you show, the more love you know and grow.  I got this idea from the pro-vegan Eating Animals that I’ve been reading.  It speaks to something I wrote a few days ago from The Face on Your Plate with regards to veganism being about love (Day 206).  The passage that Foer uses is: “compassion is a muscle that gets stronger with use, and the regular exercise of choosing kindness over cruelty would change us” (258).

Love will always be stronger than hate, but only with intent, only with practice and training.  Reclaiming healthy by strengthening the heart, making it more capable of caring and empathy and love.  And as I said before, when it comes to love, there is nothing better in the world.  There is nothing more powerful in the world; there is no muscle capable of more power than the heart.  There is nothing in the world, if not for love.
